The intervertebral discs are the structures located between the vertebrae in the spinal column. These discs serve as cushions or shock absorbers that help to protect the vertebrae from wear and tear, as well as providing flexibility and support to the spine. Each disc consists of a gel-like center, known as the nucleus pulposus, surrounded by a tougher outer layer called the annulus fibrosus. This design allows the discs to withstand pressure and contribute to the overall movement and stability of the vertebral column.

In the context of the other choices, cartilage is indeed present in joints and can be found between some bones, but it does not specifically refer to the structures found between vertebrae. Ligaments connect bones to other bones and help stabilize joints, while tendons connect muscles to bones, neither of which directly fills the space between individual vertebrae. Therefore, the intervertebral discs are specifically designed for the function of providing support and movement between vertebral bodies, making them the correct answer.
